In April 2011, CDF provided $12.5 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing to Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy to renovate and expand an existing building into a charter high school with a health sciences and college preparatory focus. The building, located at 2520 S. Western Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, was renovated and built out to a 100,890 square foot LEED certified facility that houses over 750 students.
The school’s curriculum integrates hands-on health sciences training with the goal of college matriculation and employment in the health care sector. Students have access to health professionals in the Illinois Medical District and have the option of graduating with certifications in nursing, health administration, or health technology, in addition to a high school diploma. The school also offers options for adult learners and continuing students, including GED classes and Licensed Practical Nurse preparatory training, while providing on-site daycare for students during their training.
IHSCA held a grand opening event on September 22, 2011.
